For the Press
Everything you need, including the number that makes us look worst. Take what you like; no permission required.
In one sentence
ONE FROM YOU asks every person on Earth for one dollar, promises nothing in return, and prints a table on its own home page proving the goal is impossible.
In one paragraph
Eight billion people. One dollar each. The creator says plainly that he keeps the money, that nothing is delivered, and that passing the richest man alive would take four hundred billion givers — roughly fifty times everyone alive. That last figure is on the page, in a table, because the joke only works if the arithmetic is honest. It is the inverse of his other project, LARGESS, where a handful of wealthy people give large sums for nothing; ONE FROM YOU is the same idea run through the entire population instead.
The facts, worst one first
Raised to date: nothing. The counter on the home page reads zero and we would rather you print that than find it yourself. Who keeps the money: one named individual, on every receipt. What a giver receives: nothing — plus a position in the order of givers, if they ask for it. Is it a charity: no, and it says so; if you want a dollar to do good, almost any charity is a better destination and the site tells readers exactly that.
The questions you were going to ask
"Isn't this begging?" Begging implies need and hides it behind a story. There is no story here: a person is asking for a dollar because a dollar is nothing and eight billion of them is not.
"Will he really pass Elon Musk?" No. The page says no, in a table, above the fold-and-a-half.
"Why would anyone give?" Because a dollar costs less than the joke is worth, and because being number 43 in something absurd is a small pleasure that money can, unusually, still buy.
"Is this legal?" Unconditional gifts between adults are legal. Nothing is sold, so nothing can be mis-sold.
The sister project
LARGESS — the same honesty, aimed at the rich: large tributes, a public Ledger, a contestable Crown, and a Debt Roll for anyone who takes their money back. The pair is the story if your angle is class rather than scale.
